Framing

Health-literacy-matched teaching is not lower-tier teaching. It is the technical core of patient education.

Narrative

Choosing an educational strategy that lands with a specific patient and family means matching reading level, language, cognitive load, cultural context, and emotional bandwidth, all under time pressure with whatever materials your unit has. The sub-competency captures both the technical knowledge (learning theories, methodologies for assessing literacy) and the situational judgment (when to lean on a teach-back, when to pull in an interpreter, when to defer to a family member as the educational target). For new graduates this is where the bedside research finds the largest gap: not in the desire to teach, but in the repertoire of strategies available when the first approach fails.

Evidence

BSN student reflective writing on first patient education attempts. Voice-memo analysis with charge nurses on what they have to coach new grads through.
