About Kaira

A nursing-led platform built in the open.

Kaira is a working community and learning system for nurses across the career arc, from BSN through CNO. We are building it the way we would want it built for our own students, our own preceptors, and our own teams.

Foundation

A non-profit foundation owns the framework.

The Five Practices framework, the AACN Essentials crosswalk, and the Progression Indicators rubric sit inside a nursing-led non-profit foundation. The for-profit company that ships the product licenses the framework. It cannot fork it, gate it, or sell it to insurers. Educators and L&D leaders sit on the foundation board alongside practicing nurses.

  • The framework is and will remain free to read, cite, and teach from.
  • No employer, payer, or vendor sits on the foundation board.
  • Major changes to the framework require a published rationale and a vote.

Governance

Every change is proposed, reviewed, and signed off in public.

We borrowed the model from biomedical standards bodies. Anyone can propose a change to a sub-competency mapping. The relevant audiences (educator, L&D leader, Kaira admin) vote, and a designated admin signs off. No silent edits. No surprise updates. If you teach to this framework, you can see what changed and why.

  • Proposal, then cross-perspective review, then admin sign-off, then version bump.
  • Anchor authorship credited to the contributor.
  • Old versions stay readable. Your old artifacts do not break.

Architecture

Built so the community owns the work, not the platform.

Three coordinated surfaces share one identity and one framework: a community for nurses, a review tool for educators and L&D leaders, and an AI coach. They share one record. A preceptor observation, a reflection, and a curriculum mapping all line up on the same competency.

Community

Cohorts, journal, growth record

Review

Coach

AI coach with role-pair pipeline

Three apps (Community, Review, Coach) sharing one identity model, one framework, and one set of audience-scoped permissions.
